A picture book about the power of stories
Meet the brave women who carried books across the Appalachian mountains.
SOME STORIES ARE TOO IMPORTANT TO BE FORGOTTEN
During the Great Depression, families living deep in the Appalachian mountains had little access to books. But a group of determined women changed that.
They rode horses and mules over steep mountain trails, carrying saddlebags full of stories to readers who were waiting eagerly for them.
BOOKS UP THE MOUNTAIN
A beautiful picture book that tells the remarkable true story of the packhorse librarians who rode miles through snow, rain, and rugged mountain paths to bring books to isolated families during the Great Depression.

Meet the Book Woman
Before the birds begin to sing or the sun makes plans to rise, Book Woman mounts her surefooted mule and begins her journey through the mountains.
Old and young wait eagerly for her arrival.
Nothing can stop her, because she knows she carries more than books.
She carries stories.
And stories change lives.
